And why is this on mac rumors.

Does it really matter what the competition does.

Because now they're doing this, it's only a matter of time before they turn their heads to iOS?

As long as it is MEANINGFUL to run OS/X on generic PCs, technical solutions (and ever better ones for that matter) will always be found.

The only way for Apple to safeguard OS/X from generic machines is to make such hacking MEANINGLESS. The solution is not in security technologies such as TPM but in MARKETING: Building machines that are evidently cheaper, beautiful, feature-rich and FASTER than the competition.

(Same goes for iPod and DRM, which was also cracked recently).

MW2's plot wasn't too ludicrous. You infiltrate a Russian terrorist cell, you're commanding officer betrays you, starts a war between the US and Russia. The only ludicrous part that I can remember is a nuke blowing apart the ISS.

There are many things wrong with MW2's plot. Instead of typing them all out i'll just copypasta them.

As the mission opens, were treated to General Shepherd reciting a litany of Makarovs excesses over a montage of shocking headlines. Makarov is an internationally known figure of menace, then, with a Russian military record. So when he confidently machineguns his way through the airport without even bothering to put on a mask, are we to believe that the Russian authorities werent able to identify him from security camera footage?
Instead, Russia blames a nobody CIA agent found dead at the scene who was killed by a point-blank pistol shot to the head. That doesnt raise any red flags at all? The obvious conclusion is that the whole thing was an American plot, and that a full-scale invasion of the continental US is the appropriate response. The transition to the Takedown favela mission begets more confusion, such as: how did Shepherd tie the shell casings to Rojas? Meticulous analysis of the cutscene indicates that he actually re-created a 3D model of a shell casing from security camera footage, which was sufficiently hi-rez to make a match against a big bullet database. So the Russians, who had the actual shell casings to analyze, couldnt figure that out? The security footage was crisp enough to recreate minute detail on a spent shell casing, but not of sufficient quality to identify Makarovs face. Conclusion: Makarovs face is smaller than a bullet.

When the warriors of 141 get to South America, they make short work of tracking down their man. Unfortunately, HQ wont send a helicopter to extract them from the favela so Soap rings up his old pal Nikolai on a payphone. Luckily, the Russian informant just so happens to be tooling around Rio in a chopper and pops right over to pick them up. The mission itself, dashing weaponless across rooftops and frantically leaping to safety, was brilliant fun in the heat of the moment. But upon reflection, we must concede that nothing about the scenario makes a bit of sense. But look, its Nikolai!!

With his newfound freedom, Prices first order of business is to launch a nuclear warhead at the east coast of the United States, with the goal of snuffing out the Russian invasion. Of course, he wasnt planning to nuke America outright. When a nuclear explosion occurs in space, the only effect is an EMP blast that destroys all unshielded electronics in its line of sight.

While it made for an intensely dramatic scene as the burst rippled across America and demolished the ISS, theres no way Price could have launched a missile from a Russian nuclear sub by himself. Did he just ring up Nikolai on a payphone to get the launch codes? How did he singlehandedly defeat the physical safety measures? You dont just push the glowy red button with the mean face on it. There are elaborate control systems in place to prevent just such unauthorized launches.

    http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Games/M/Modern%20Warfare%202/Everything%20else/plot%20holes/Finished/112009_modernwarfare2_obs06--article_image.jpg
Above: Two people have to turn launch keys simultaneously to fire a real nuclear missile

One more thing: how did Price get it to detonate in space, anyhow? Were pretty sure that wasnt part of the missiles original instructions. Regardless, if the Russians were serious about their kill America plan from the get-go, they probably would have launched HEMP and nuclear strikes of their own as a precursor to the invasion.

Once the Russians have been successfully repelled, Shepherd and Task Force 141 get down to the business of mopping up Makarov. Shepherd calls out two potential hiding places, the last safe havens on earth for Makarov and his men. Incidentally, no one stopped to wonder how Shepherd suddenly uncovered these safe havens or, if he knew about them all along, why they werent investigated after the airport massacre. But wait! Intel gathered at one of the safehouses links Makarov to Shepherd: cue the shocking murder of Ghost and Roach at Shepherds hands.

Devastated, Price and Soap moan about how theyre all alone in the world with no one to turn to. Umm, guys? Arent you technically still officers in the British Armed Forces? Sure Shepherd was calling the duo terrorists, but Americas credibility on the world stage was shot to hell after the airport incident. Someone over at SAS would remember the heroes who gunned down Zakhaev and send help. No? OK, better just grab Nikolai and go after the bad guy yourselves.

Theres more you can read on your own, but these are the biggest imo.

I want My next iPhone to look like this,

    222383

Also agreed. If they make that (with or without the black strip) i would buy one in a heartbeat.. plus i wouldn't have to buy another iPhone in years as i can't see how they could improve on a physical design like that imho.

Although i'd probably have to upgrade in 2013 when they drop the software support for it..

well of course i've been messing with my systems all weekend long, and of course i always run into some bad luck.

so i have 3 i7 920 systems. one is an asus and it's running bigadv and 2 x gpu. it's been my best reliable system so far. it's running well right now

my second system was just running 3 x gpu. i wasn't running bigadv b/c it had a heat problem. this is one i built. i decided to take everything apart and take off the cpu cooler it came with and i put on this huge one that i bought. it took an hour, but i got it! and it works great. the problem is that now it doesn't recognize all my ram. i had 6 GB, which is enough for running bigadv units in a VM in windows, and then run several gpu clients. but with only 4 GB of ram, this won't work. so i'm in the process of installing ubuntu right now on it. this will take away some of my gpus

and my third i7 rig is an alienware. it came with one GTX 260, and i decided to take one from my home built system and put in the this one. it's got 2 slots, but of course the second slot doesn't work. i called alienware, and they are supposed to come out and fix it. probably a new motherboard i'm guessing. so right now it's running bigadv and 1 gpu.

i just hope i can get the one i built running bigadv in ubuntu. i'll keep you updated

Stop being such asses and realise that proprietary DRM on music, video, pictures or digital books is a really, really, ridiculously stupid thing for consumers and society. I'd rather have no DRM, but if we have to, let's make it something that everyone can use.

Also... this isn't being driven entirely by Apple. The content owners are as much, if not more to blame. We all need to start speaking up about this or we're going to REALLY regret it in a few year's time.

That's just wrong on so many levels. I wish I had more time...

I really don't care anymore...tomorrow will probably follow a familiar formula - some disappointments, some bullseyes.

This is what I want after seeing the infamous "cube with a handle" patent that surfaced earlier this week:

That's just a continuation of the old cube patents - keeps anyone from copying Apple. The old cube had a handle too you know.

I would try calling XBL support and asking for their supervisor, and that person's supervisor, & so on. Explain to them, (stay firm on your point) the reason you need it and what you can do with it. If you need to, I would mention you are in the process of obtaining a warrant for the IP. As you already know, them not knowing the IP is complete and utter BS.

That is the angle I am going to try today. Microsoft is not very willing to let you talk to the higher-ups. I guess they figure the longer they blow me off, the longer the thieves have to run further away and I'll be stuck buying another 360.

Did you buy the X-Box with a credit card? Some cards offer some kind of protection on stolen items. Could be worth looking into.

I bought the 360 on launch day back in 2005 with cash. Camped out at Wal-Mart for 18 hours for it too. Again, didn't do this so some idiot could steal it :(

You're basically bragging that you have $100K in Apple stock. Nice!!!! :D Your faith is being rewarded handsomely...

Two can play at that game. I still have the 400 shares I bought in 1997.

Seems like a solid update to Aperture. I'm curious to see if there is a flickrexport-type feature included in this plug-in api mentioned. That's the one thing I miss from when I previously used iPhoto.

I'd be worried about that exept one incontrovertible fact. Steve Jobs has more creative spark in his left pinky than M$ does in it whole genetic tree.

I think that's the idea. The implication I got was that they were going to give Microsoft a generous stretch of rope and let them hang themselves.

As soon as someone creates a dual format drive all this fuss will die down. It was the same with DVD +/- . Give it a year and NEC will have a dual format drives for both computers and players and no-one will have to decide.

I'm not sure about what you're saying here, because content producers will still be having to supply the same film in two different formats.

They'll likely drop the less popular format, and thus, we'll have a winner.

DVD +/- is a writing thing. It's not the same, because people don't care where they get their blank discs from as much.

Ick. This whole format war is nasty, but I guess I never understood why Apple decided to support blu-ray over HD-DVD. Seemed like they did it just to go against what Microsoft had chosen. The and the whole Steve wanting crippled hardware for another (his other) company's benefit over computer users...the whole situation stinks.

As a consumer I'm trying as hard as possible to sit this one out.

Have you read the format specifications? Blu Ray is clearly better (on paper at least), and I'd assume that's the reason they went with it.

I'm getting really tired of reading "iPhone on Verizon 4G after Christmas!" rumors on here. WHy is it that every time someone says "Oh, I've heard the iPhone's coming to Verizon in January," MacRumors puts it on the front page or Page 2? Are enough people so totally obsessed with the iPhone, they pee their pants if they don't hear a Verizon iPhone rumor every day/every other day?

    Yes.

No one, no one would take a poll that's seven-months out-of-date and try and pass it off as an accurate representation of current public opinion.

If you can find more recent generic ballot data, I'd love to see it.

Even if the graph was up-to-date as of today it would still not indicate one way or another what would happen in 2012, but rather just give us some general perception as to where the trend is headed, just like the graph I posted. A day, a week, a month... and certainly a year is a LIFETIME in politics.

I can't see how people can vote this negative...

The App Stores are Apple's thing. Why can't they award the best apps on those stores?

Seems like a good idea to me. :)
