On the MacBook Pros the graphics connection was downgraded from PCIe x16 to PCIe x8 to get PCIe lanes for the TBolt controller.

Have the teardowns or other info shown whether that's the case for the Imacs?

Well, the CPU only has 16 PCIe lanes so unless there is something magical going on, it is a PCIe x8 slot.

Yes... The "Newton" will rise again damit!

If Apple were to release a new Newton I would buy in a second, the Newton was fanastic even though it was made a little before it's time.

I wouldn't be surprised if we seen a Newton-ish thing from Apple in the next few months.

    Not exactly.

    From Wikipedia:
"More technically, W-CDMA is a wideband spread-spectrum mobile air interface that utilizes the direct sequence Code Division Multiple Access signalling method (or CDMA) to achieve higher speeds and support more users compared to the older TDMA signalling method of GSM networks. W-CDMA is a competitor to CDMA2000."

Yes, and that doesn't contradict what I said. That's exactly what I said.

And if you look at this presentation on page 9: http://www.ieee.or.com/Archive/diversity_in_3g/diversity_in_3g.pdf

you'll see that the W-CDMA standard did evolve from GSM and CDMA (IS-95).

If that's what it says, it's false. W-CDMA was developed originally for FOMA. It is not a derivative of IS-95, the only thing it has in common with IS-95 is that it, like IS-95, is a CDMA air interface standard.

It certainly didn't "evolve from GSM" either, any more than an electric motor can evolve from a Ford Taurus. GSM is a complete standard. W-CDMA is an air interface standard. Further, GSM has nothing in it at all that that's in W-CDMA.

Many people use W-CDMA as a synonym for UMTS. They're not the same thing. UMTS, 3G GSM, uses W-CDMA, but W-CDMA is an independent standard, and wasn't originally even designed with UMTS in mind.

The relationship is basically UMTS = (Enhanced GSM - FHTDMA) + W-CDMA.

There are a lot of other references out there too, but these are the 2 I have readily available.

Well, one quote confirms what I said, the other is wrong... sorry.

There is no TDMA in UMTS. UMTS uses the W-CDMA air interface standard, as does FOMA. W-CDMA uses an CDMA air interface technology, but was developed independently of IS-95.

IOr it could be used to track shoes stolen at the gym. When you come running out of the building saying "which way did the thief go?", somebody who routinely tracks everyone near that building would be able to say "they went thataway!"

That is a very good idea.

    Bible belt.

There are a lot of places where you have to go to a liquor/package store to buy real beer because state law only allows supermarkets/convenience stores to sell 3.2% beer.

Ironic considering the massive amount of drive through liquor stores many of those states have isn't it? LOL

Quick questions - How does folding with multiple GPU in a rig work? Do you use one GPU client and all the GPUs fold that one WU faster or do you use a GPU client for each card?

    Netflix advantages:
    Netflix disadvantages:
    - only available in USA and Canada (extremely limited selection in Canada)

    Apple advantages:
    - could be launched in a lot of countries (probably everywhere there currently is an iTunes Store)
    - already have a lot of iTunes Store user accounts worldwide

While it would be nice for folks overseas to have access to this service, it is unlikely to affect US users due to copyright issues (ie if I as a US user travel to Europe I probably wouldn't be able to access my Apple movie account there and stream content).

    Apple disadvantages:
    - would probably require an Apple-made device to access the content (bonus: no Silverlight installation required on Mac), as I don't see Apple making an app for the Xbox360, PS3, Wii and other set-top boxes (they'd rather sell you an :apple:TV)
    - their servers are located in the USA, so I don't know if it's enough to serve streaming media worldwide. Do they currently have servers in other countries for the international iTunes Stores?

Technical issues aside, however, it all boils down to selection and price.

Unless they keep their pricing structure very similar to Netflix they will have a tough time with it. Especially if the service requires their hardware. Plus Netflix has such a great reach into the market with their app, and as you noted I don't see Apple designing an app to work with other hardware (and siphon sales from the :apple:TV).

It appears many should unplug all their firewire devices before applying this update.

I believe my problem was caused by the Target Mode on my Macbook.

I had just put my Macbook Pro in Target mode, and dumped my MP3's to it from my Mac Pro.

When I plugged in my Macbook to the Mac Pro, the macbook wasn't detected... Then I tried it with the Macbook Pro...

Now, none of the 3 work.

I heard about that...interesting. I have never hacked or jail breaked a phone from any manufacturer and don't intend to. So that isn't an issue for me. At least you can hold the DroidX anyway you like and still make a call as well as set up a mobile hotspot...two things you can't do on an iPhone4.

    Girl,

I just talked to my boyfriend last night without a bumper holding it that way for an hour and half, and so did he. We didn't have no issues at all. I think that ms. verizon and ms.google have done paid off ms. consumer reports to give a bad rating. Convient timing for the droid x release, uh humm. I would like to find someone with a legitimate problem. Blackberry's, nokia's, etc all do the same, so they should have bad rattings too.

Can someone "dress up" as an Apple staff member and spy around?
Or better yet, is there anyone who can disguise himself as Steve jobs, go backstage and act all stressed out like as if you had a blackout and needed your notes to rehearse for the keynote?

Too bad I can't be there, oh well, still got January 24th in NY for the Apple tech talk, I wanna see some Leopard features and learn how to use them. Anyone else going there?

White iPhone 4 looks absolutely great to my eyes, just as the white iPad 2 does. I'll personally be waiting for the iPhone 5 until I upgrade my iPhone 3GS, but this looks great nonetheless in the meantime.

To answer some questions about the car situation (I love cars even more than Apple stuff!):

    1. That is clearly a car park.

    2. Even if it's not, why does the fact there's no brake lights illuminated have anything to do with it? Drivers of cars making up rows of traffic in Europe generally don't all have their foot on the brake pedal - most cars have manual transmissions and thus don't try and creep forward whilst in traffic. It is considered that those who do drive an automatic should knock the gearbox into neutral and apply the handbrake if they are to be stopped for any length of time - especially in the dark - as to prevent bright brake lights from blinding the driver behind. One should only illuminate their brake lights - whatever transmission - if they are at the rear of a queue of stationary traffic and can see a car approaching from behind at speed.

    3. Cars in Belgium and left-hand-drive, i.e. they drive on the right, just as in the US. In Europe, it is only the UK and Ireland who have right-hand-drive cars and drive on the left.

We're not idiots...of course the iPhone needs to figure out where I am when I ask Google to locate me on a map...or explicitly allow an app (like AroundMe) to identify restaurants within 15 miles of my location. But to constantly track me every single minute of the day is just wrong. Period. End of story.

Very likely this Federal lawsuit will pave the way for much clear disclosure by companies regarding tracking our physical movements.

I'll get slammed for this - but I don't care. Apple is playing a big part in the dumbing down of (some of) society by taking control/options away from users and keeping a walled garden. And I don't want/intend this to turn into a debate about walled/not; security; etc. My point is - that Apple and several other companies/educational institutions and even parents are increasingly participating in the dumbing down of America/other countries.

Apple doesn't want users to have to worry about x, y and z. That's GREAT. It really is. But at the same time - but taking users away from understanding the technology they are using - they are also contributing to the very thing they are (in Steve's latest speech) trying to avoid.

I'd love a car that is "maintenance free." Until the car actually needed some work done. If I have to rely on a 3rd party to do that maintenance and I can't do it myself - then it means those skills will never be learned or used (naturally.) I don't always see this as a positive.

I'm able to do a lot of electrical work and computer/video/etc repair work on my own because I was able to (when I was young) take things apart, learn how things worked inside and out.

    I'll stop rambling...

TBH the 27" IMac is sounding very tempting with the double TB and SB
why on earth is the HDD not sata-3

i was planning on copping an IMac for my family home, as my parent and sisters love my MBP - but i really do not care if the IMac CPU is 10-15% faster, when the hdd only links to sata3 - as i would of put an owc ssd in!

Guess i will wait for a 2012 re-fresh when apple finally recognises sata-6
i hope, rather than giving us TB - which i love, but at this point in time is a little redundant as there is no TB equipped peripherals available - hopefully a next gen apple cinema display with OLED and TB would also get my cash!

Before my iPod, I had an old iRiver CD Walkman made of Magnesium Alloy. The interface was horrible, but the main unit's design was SEXYYYY.

However, the magnesium definitely did tarnish (it was finished in silver). I'm not sure if it was poor quality, was actually the paint on top of the magnesium that was wearing off, or something else.

Somehow the magnesium rumor sounds off. Unless Apple intends to start sheathing all of their metal products with magnesium, which would be prohibitively expensive, the colors would no longer match.

When I did folding@home on a computer I did it on an 1.42 ghz eMac, nothing compared to what you guys use now :p but it was the only thing I had at the time.

Right now I use my PS3 running 24/7 as my folding machine.

I've never been big on Folding@home, I'd rather donate money or my time to an organization (I'm not bashing Folding@Home though, I think it's a great thing, it just doesn't interest me personally).
